The primary purpose of the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project (AWAP) is to provide emergency housing and competent supportive services to those individuals attempting to escape a violent home environment. AWAP has been operating a shelter in the Lewiston/Auburn area for thirty years. Other services are provided for those individuals not in need of emergency shelter and are included in the descriptions below.
Emergency Shelter: AWAP’s domestic violence shelter offers emergency housing to victims of domestic violence and their children. AWAP provides emotional support, develops safety plans and extends case management services, advocacy, parenting support, housing assistance, job search assistance and referrals to other service providers for the women and children residing in shelter.
Transitional Services: Individuals participating in the transitional services program are generally women and their children that are leaving the emergency shelter. Affordable housing and support services for up to 24 months are designed to assist formerly battered women rebuild their lives after leaving an abusive relationship.
Outreach Advocacy: Outreach offices are located in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties Advocates in Lewiston, Norway, Rumford, and Farmington provide support, information, referrals to community resources and court advocacy regarding Protection from Abuse and Harassment, Parental Rights and Responsibilities, and other court proceedings. Support Groups: AWAP facilitates support groups in various locations to provide victims of domestic violence a safe place to share their experiences and support one another. Please contact the office nearest you to learn about availability in your area.
Domestic Violence and the Department of Health and Human Services:
A domestic violence advocate has an office at DHHS and serves as a liaison between domestic violence and children’s issues. This individual provides support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence involved within the DHHS system of care. COMMUNITY RESPONSE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION SERVICES:
Community Education: Educators can provide in service trainings for employers, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, community groups and others. Please contact us to find out how you can arrange for a training to meet your needs.
Youth Services: In addition to Voices Committed to Change, AWAP’s peer training and support program, educators present to faculty and students on the issues of teen dating violence and healthy relationships. One-on-one support is also available for youth.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are an important resource in the work that we do, and different opportunities are available for people to get involved. Alternatives to Abuse Program: This 48 week state certified educational program is designed to focus on victim safety and increased accountability for people who use abusive behaviors. |
